Reading Tai-Bo

Reading Tai-Bo

What did I learn from my reading this week…

That there is a fine line between preaching and theme. I just finished Max: a Maximum Ride Novel by James Patterson. It has some environmental themes wherein the bird-kids are attacked by giant mutated fish/mountain things that were the result of toxic dumping. It was very exciting and did not feel preachy. The novel before this one however, The Final Warning, sometimes slipped over the line from theme to sermon. I don’t mind an environmental theme at all, but I never enjoy being preached at in fiction form. When the characters begin to give lectures about global warming that is when I begin to skim. This is something I need to remember, especially as a Christian writer. I need to remember never to preach. To simply have my characters live and hate and love and laugh and encounter God just the way the rest of us do. On the journey of life.
