The Harrowing/Heartwarming Parent Moment of the Week

We had an emergency rescue this week. The baby chicks were under a brooding light in an old horse trough down at the cousins house. Since they do not have electricity, they had to purchase a propane heat lamp…which suddenly broke. The temperature in the chick pen was down to 65 degrees (it is supposed to be 90) and the chicks were all huddled together cheeping out their displeasure. So we pulled out an old fish tank, brought it up to our house, hooked up an electric heat lamp, and moved the baby chicks to our place. The boys have really been enjoying watching the cute little chicks and listening to their soft cheeping during the day and night.

We did have one harrowing moment though. Puffis, one of the new chicks has a pasty bottom issue. It is fine as long as you regularly wash the pasted on poo off of her so that she doesn’t get clogged up. It will go away with time. One of the boys volunteered to wash off Puffis in the sink. I did not see him doing it, I only warned him to make sure that the water wasn’t too hot. My sister, however, saw him cleaning the chick, with our green kitchen scrubby, that he then put back in the sink! I heard about this incident the next morning on my walk…after I’d washed out my tea cup…with a green kitchen scrubby! Oh the dangers and joys of mothering boys.
