God This Week

God This Week

Our boys love their pet chickens. And these hens have turned out to be surprisingly gentle and affectionate parts of our family. They have learned to come when called (for treats of course), play fetch with the boys (as long as you just want them to chase the football and not actually retrieve it) and rush to the edge of the fence to cluck at the boys when they come home from school.

I have been trying to share some of my favorite verses with the boys and realized something amazing. Jesus compared Himself to a chicken. God gave these fluffy egg-layers one of His own characteristics. How did He compare Himself to a hen? He described His love for us as that of a gentle mother, a hen longing to gather her chicks from danger, under the safety of her wings.

Luke 13:34–“Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.”

God loves the creatures He has made. The boys love their hens and so does God. He especially loves His children, even the naughty ones, and longs to gather them to Himself. This is something about God that I think my boys will understand. Thank you Lord for giving me a chicken verse and for your great love.
